In the PDC 501 format, a leg starts at 501 and players subtract points from their remaining score. The DRA rules describe an exact zero reached with a double finish, unless a specific event format says otherwise.
A display of 40 remaining is therefore a checkout possibility, not a completed leg. A double 20 would total 40 and meet the double-out condition; an ordinary single 20 would leave 20.
A leg is not always the match
Darts events can consist of several legs, and a tournament may also group them into sets. Winning one leg says nothing by itself about the number of legs needed to win the match. The match format supplies that larger threshold.
This is a different endpoint from an esports map or series result. A map score and a series score can diverge in meaning even when both update live.
Fishing has another score unit
